NFL Training Camp Position Battles: Focus on QB
Quarterback is the most important position in football. The QB is the team leader and usually the face of the franchise. It has always been said having one good QB is better than multiple passable QBs. The quarterback is the player the team must rally around more than any other position. Not every team has a solid #1 QB and training camp/preseason helps to decide who will take the reigns as a teams QB.
Lets start in Baltimore where the most intriguing QB battle is taking place. Three players are in contention to be the guy who runs the Ravens' offense. 6-year pro Kyle Boller, second year player Troy Smith, and rookie Joe Flacco are the candidates for new head coach Jim Harbaugh to pick between. Boller has never quite developed into what many believed he would become, but now finds himself as the veteran and as of right now is the teams #1 QB. Troy Smith started two games last season as a rookie and with his running ability could be a threat from anywhere on the f! ield. Joe Flacco is the future, but he very well could be the present if the team and coaching staff rally themselves around him. I do not see Flacco winning this job, but he could find himself plugged in later in the season if the team has a bad record. That leaves Boller and Smith. I fully believe Troy Smith will win the starting job. Kyle Boller has never quite impressed and Smith took over the reigns at the end of last season.
Another team with QB controversy is the Chicago Bears. Rex Grossman has been the guy for a few years and helped Chicago get to a Super Bowl two years ago, but has never taken complete control of the job. Kyle Orton has been waiting in the wings getting a few starts here and there and now finds himself equal with Grossman. Kyle Orton looks like he will win the job, but I do not believe he will keep it for very long. Orton has not shown me anything, while Rex has shown glimpses of greatness.
Our final stop is New York where the Jets! for the second year in a row have Chad Pennington and Kellen ! Clemens dueling for the job. The Jets situation could get interesting if they acquire future Hall of Famer Brett Favre from Green Bay. If the Jets do land Favre, Pennington would go to Green Bay with draft picks and Clemens will back up Favre. I do not foresee that happening. Favre looks like he will be on his way to Tampa Bay very soon. Pennington's weak arm has hampered his chances to become a dominant #1 QB in the NFL, and I believe NY will pick Clemens to lead this team despite his inconsistency and youth.
Plenty more NFL talk as we approach the start of the season, including my division by division predictions coming around the middle to end of the month.
